Date Night Dressing

You often hear that women dress for women not men, and I have to say it’s definitely true in my life. I dress for myself, but I know that other women are the ones who will appreciate my outfit, whereas guys often think I look a bit insane, or like a granny, my boyfriend included (he often says I dress like I’m going to church). So when dressing for a date night with my lovely Luke I generally steer clear of my crazy vintage pieces and try to put together outfits that aren’t so ‘out there’. I find it hilarious that Luke hardly bats an eyelid when I don a fancy cocktail dress and spend ages doing my hair and makeup. Put me in jeans, a t-shirt and not a scrap of make up and he’s rushing to compliment me. Maybe he’s trying to tell me something haha.

On Saturday night we went to one of our favourite bars and played Connect Four (while drinking wine, because we’re adults). Seeing as the weather was a bit crap and I knew I’d be stuffing my face with yummy bar snacks I went for a casual comfy outfit made up of a few classics. Throw on some cute shoes and easy accessories, this outfit took me about 24 seconds to whip together.

Next time I’m lamenting that I have nothing to wear I must remember that the leather skirt/t-shirt combo is preeeeetty fail safe.

Boyfriend Jeans

I was going to make this outfit one of my Street Style Steals, but it actually isn’t based off any particular picture (although it’s very similar!). It’s funny how since starting this particular feature I’ve found I’m taking inspiration more and more from street style images. My style ebbs and flows naturally and changes fairly regularly (just like everyone). Last summer all I wore was full circle skirts and little sleeveless tops tied at the waist, a very vintage 50s vibe. This summer just past I’ve hardly worn that kind of outfit, leaning towards a more modern look with lots of pattern mixing and denim. I’ve been moving away from that perfectly styled vintage look (which I could never quite perfect anyway) and am mixing my vintage, thrifted and modern clothes in a bit more of a unique way, well I’m trying to any way!

A few weeks ago I decided I wanted a pair of boyfriend jeans to add to my autumn wardrobe, so I went out looking for the perfect pair to DIY. It didn’t take long, op shops are full of jeans in all shapes, sizes and styles. Boyfriend jeans have never been my usual style, but after seeing so many pictures plastered over Pinterest I really wanted to try them, and I so glad I did!

This look is made up of basic pieces pretty much everyone has in their wardrobes, a white t-shirt, comfy jeans and some black heels. When putting together outfits I normally to steer away from anything too plain and basic, I always want my outfit to be super bright or patterned or sparkly or ‘out there’ in some way. But really, classics are classics for a reason, you can mix and match them in a zillion different ways and they always look stylish. I guess I need to remember that it’s ok not to be wearing the loudest outfit in the room all the time!

I Can't Be Bothered

I seem to be going through an ‘I can’t be bothered’ phase when it comes to dressing for work. Maybe it’s the change of season, I’m sick of all my summer clothes and it’s not quite cool enough to bring out the winter gear just yet. It’s not that I don’t want to look nice for work, it’s just that I can’t be bothered wearing anything that is even vaguely restricting or uncomfortable in any way.

So I’ve been falling back on some classics, like the basic black dress I wore a few weeks ago, and also this wrap dress. It’s stretchy, it’s patterned and it’s only one piece of clothing, so I can literally throw it on and walk out the door. Hello work-wear heaven!

Vintage Perfection

I found this vintage maxi dress waiting for me at the Save the Children op shop in Mosman Park. It was love at first sight! When I took it up to the counter to pay for it the lovely volunteer tentatively asked whether I would be changing it in any way. I promised her that I planned to wear it exactly as it is, the relief in her eyes was tangible!

I’m certainly not opposed to altering vintage pieces to fit your style a little better. There is no point having a wardrobe full of glorious vintage if you are never going to wear it. But every now and then I come across something that is so perfect just the way it is. This dress fits like a dream, the print is amazing and the perma-pleats are perfection, I don’t need to change a single thing!

With the right accessories you can easily make a vintage dress a little more modern (and save the little old lady behind the counter from a heart attack!). When the weather cools down I’ll wear this dress with my leather jacket and boots, but for now a hat and sweet sunnies does the job nicely.

Sequins and Smiles

A night out with the girls always calls for something a bit special; lots of sequins, sparkle and a little vintage.

This green skirt is a recent Melville Markets find and I am in love! It’s pretty tight, so after my second helping of dessert and third cocktail at el Publico, it was feeling a little on the snug side!

I just realised that the last time I wore this sequined kaftan top was almost exactly a year ago to the day! How weird is that? I really should wear it more often because I do love it. I don’t usually wear things this low cut, but the shape of this top and the fact it is loose and has long sleeves, means the little cleavage I do flash is classy… I hope!

Summer Haze

As I mentioned in my last Life Recently post, I’ve been on a bit of an eBay binge recently and I purchased a few pairs of shoes. These Miu Miu sandals might be my favourite eBay purchase ever. They cost me $49 and are amazing. Seriously if you haven’t been on eBay recently then I would definitely recommend checking it out, especially if you are lusting after some designer shoes or accessories but can’t bring yourself to buy them full price (eBay is my go-to spot for fancy sunnies).

It can be a little dangerous though, there is function that allows you to save some key words, so you get an email any time someone puts up an item you are searching for. This is probably why in the last two weeks I’ve bought these Miu Miu sandals, some sparkly J Crew heels and a pair of red Marc Jacobs pumps… eek!

As soon as these beauties arrive in the mail I knew exactly what outfit I wanted to wear. This tie die dress is one of my favourites (ha! How many times have I said that?!), my boyfriend bought it for me from a little market stall in Thailand about 4 years ago and it has come with me on every tropical holiday since. It’s perfect for throwing on when it’s hot and sticky, which is exactly what Perth has been like recently!

P.S Looking at these pictures I realised I really should have ironed this dress before wearing it... oops!

Street Style Steal

Well hello there! For this fine Monday morning I have a new Street Style Steal for you! I love this look so much, mixing prints is my favourite and when I saw this image bouncing around Pinterest I knew straight away I wanted to give it a go.

Spots are pretty much the easiest print to mix others with and this particular fashionista obviously thought so to. The short flippy skirt worn with a masculine camo print t and comfy brogues is such a great combination of uber girly and tom boyish. It’s such an easy outfit to wear and one I will definitely be repeating!

I already owned the spotty skirt but I needed to find a camo print t-shirt, so after asking my ex-military housemate if he had one (he didn’t) I went searching through my favourite op shops. I don’t know if I’m lucky or I just know what kind of things I am most likely to find in an op shop, but so far every Street Style Steal item I’ve needed to source has only taken me one or two trips to find (touch wood!). The same went for this t-shirt. I saw the picture, decided to recreate it and the first op shop I walked into had this camo T waiting for me in the mens section.

IT’S FATE!
